18 Nov. 2001 - taken near San Jose, California


Orion to the right of the bright meteor trail - notice 3 stars sloping upward that are Orion's "belt" Sirius is the bright star rigth below the meteor. M42 is the bright red object in Orion below the belt.
30 second exposure at F1.4 50mm lense (Camera: Cannon F-1 tripod mounted, ASA 400 film) taken around 0150 PST 11/18/01 ("peak" of shower)


This one's coming right at you....
Later in the evening, this bright Leonid is as bright as the one on the left, but it's heading more or less straight down towards the viewer.  Note how bright the "head" of this meteor is.

many of the smaller meteors exhibited a color change this picture is a segment of a larger frame that shows the trail changing from green to red over the flight of the meteor.  Note the larger one above doesnt show this.
Scanned at 400dpi from color print. Stars are trailed on this 1 minute exposure at F1.4 which shows substantial sky glow.


2 small Leonid meteors.  This is a segment of a larger frame scanned at 400dpi.  Note that one trail is green only, the larger one turns yellow during flight.
