Vice President, Development

Direct the execution of product development and client service / support functions for a startup focused on the XBRL technology for automating financial reporting as used by FDIC for over 8000 member banks and major European banks. Collaborate with the CEO and Marketing on new product development vision. Manage development teams in Kirkland, WA and New Delhi, India, and oversee the service group charged with delivery of customized implementations. Administer a $2.5 million engineering and salary cost budget. Forecast human capital requirements; interview, hire, and manage overall project oversight / workflow management for staff of 26 direct and indirect reports.  

Key Achievements:

Ø       Increased effectiveness and timeliness of product release, collaborating with sales and product management in the planning process to ensure releases were complete and substantially closer to original schedule.

Ø       Decreased human capital costs by ramping up India offshore development team from 2 to 13 people.

EMBARCADERO TECHNOLOGIESSan Francisco, CA                                                                                  2002-2006

Vice President, Development

Recruited to revamp organization and facilitate overall development of 10 different products in Embarcadero’s suite of Database Administration, Development, and Modeling tools including the industry leading DBArtisan® and ER Studio® product used by 97 of the Fortune 100, and an additional 56,000 business customers. Established objectives for the division and administered $16 million salary and capital expenditures budget. Supervised domestic and international development teams in San Francisco, Denver, Monterey, Toronto, and India. Managed four directors from Engineering, Quality Assurance, Technical Documentation, and Information Technology disciplines, in addition to 110 indirect reports.

Key Achievements:

Ø       Analyzed and eliminated two desktop products based upon non-performance, which freed up additional development resources.

Ø       Managed releases of 8 different products among development teams located 5 different locations in 3 countries

Ø       Redesigned quality assurance process matrix, which reduced bug fix time 50%.

Ø       Devised IT rules for measurement and defect resolution plans to ensure compliance with Sarbanes Oxley 404.

Ø       Initiated and expanded remote global quality assurance organization in India by sourcing and securing vendor focused on delivering QA functionality, which decreased defects more than 50% on the third best selling product and was adopted by top three products.

Vice President, Engineering

Spearheaded the development, quality assurance and MIS/operations functions for an early stage company concentrating on the development of peer-to-peer network systems for secure collaboration and information exchange (Enterprise Napster). Conceptualized and established a hosted data center environment, including system configuration and architecture. Collaborated on network technology and provided advice on product direction and Internet functionality. Conducted hands-on regression testing and performed customer trial field installations at multiple locations. Hired and supervised staff of 10 direct reports.

Key Achievements:

Ø       Released product to early customers (GM, Accenture) through three software production versions.

Ø       Conceptualized emerging standards for accessing files over the internet; reviewed and assisted with authoring patent applications which resulted in patent awards and proved instrumental in acquisition by Microsoft in 2002.

ZAPLET, INC.Redwood City, CA                                                                                                                  1999-2001

Vice President, Network Operations

Initiated the network operations department as one of the first 30 employees at Zaplet Inc. (formerly Firedrop Inc.), a venture-backed company in the Kleiner-Perkins family of companies. Hired 10 team members and established site operations for a major three-tier, application-based site running on the Sun/Java/Oracle (Java/J2EE) platform, which included hosting service for early customers and redundant connectivity with substantial uptime guarantees. Designed performance suite, provided specifications to developers, and conducted system performance benchmarking. Administered a $4 million equipment and salary cost budget.

Key Achievements:

Ø       Launched the $3 million data center, which encompassed negotiation of software licensing, hosting facilities, internet connectivity, and hardware contracts / leasebacks.

Ø       Performed cost analysis of deployment for various customer and reference configuration, and participated in cost reduction process that yielded 20-50% savings during deployment phase

Ø       Designed release cycle for company and ensured adherence to serviceability and liability issues. 

Ø       Member of team that repurposed the company from an Internet entity to an enterprise software company in 2000.

POINTCAST, INC.Cupertino, CA                                                                                                                  1995-1997

Vice President, Systems Engineering

Built the development, QA and Internet operations team at PointCast’s Broadcast Facilities, focused on development of server software, hardware and network operations. Performed public speaking and press/analyst presentation roles, and participated in business development and strategy activities. Managed staff of 75 employees. 

Key Achievements:

Ø       Grew user base from zero to more than 2 million on a weekly basis within first six months, while maintaining over 99.5% uptime and scaling server capacity by a factor of over 1000x.

Ø       Conducted technical presentations, which assisted in closing $38 million in first-round funding.

Ø       Designed significant components of the server architecture to enable scaling to millions of concurrent users.

ORACLE CORPORATIONRedwood Shores, CA                                                                                            1990-1995

Vice President, Internet Products

Promoted to establish group charged with developing Oracle’s entry into the Web Server/Application server space. Supervised staff of 15 employees.

Key Achievement:

Ø       Released first product and first “free” Oracle product for use by developers integrating Oracle applications with the World Wide Web (co-inventor, Patent #5,761,673), which led to establishment of major company-wide initiative to enable domination of Oracle in the internet-facing web application marketplace based on an RDBMS.

Director-level Development Management

Orchestrated the turnaround for a major product group with late-ship issues. Supervised team of 50 in Network Products Division producing Oracle SQL*NET Version 2 + related products. 

Key Achievement:

Ø       Created appropriate development/release/SQA process within the organization to enable release of high quality products ported to more than 75 platforms.

Development Management

Managed teams comprised up to 25 employees in both porting (Platform Technologies) and Server Technology division, focused on creating / maintaining Oracle networking and relational database server products. Platforms involved included DOS, OS/2, Windows, Windows NT, Novell Netware, SunOS, Sun Solaris, and network device drivers.

CIBA GEIGY CORPORATIONBasel, Switzerland                                                                                           1986-1990

Consultant

Maintained an existing base of over 100 nodes installed in Ciba-Geigy plants throughout Switzerland and Germany, working with real time process control systems. Enhanced the system and increased reliability

Key Achievement:

Ø       Led internal Ciba-Geigy/contractor team in creating an implementation of the real time control system based on open standards, including VXWorks, UNIX, X Windows/Motif, and Remote Procedure Calls as an Architect.
